TRACTOR TRAILER ACCIDENT SHUTS DOWN INTERSTATE FOR HOURS

A tractor-trailer crash which occurred on April 10, 2013, caused delays on Interstate 64 for the majority of the afternoon.

The accident occurred in the eastbound lanes at the mile marker 97 in Augusta County, blocking traffic for almost three miles. State police say the tractor-trailer, loaded with approximately 50,000 gallons of milk, collided with a pickup truck and then overturned.

Both drivers were taken to Augusta Health.

Virginia State Police are on the scene of a two-vehicle crash in Augusta County on Interstate 64 at the 97 mile marker. At 12:36 p.m., state police were called to the scene in the eastbound lanes. A tanker truck collided with a pickup truck in the eastbound lanes of I-64. The impact caused the tanker truck, which is loaded with approximately 50,000 gallons of milk, to overturn onto its side. The drivers of both vehicles were transported to Augusta Health with non-life threatening injuries.

Eastbound lanes of I-64 are closed to through traffic as crews work to upright and remove the tanker truck. Traffic is being detoured around the crash at Exit 96. State police hope to have at least one eastbound lane open to through traffic by 3:30 p.m.
